Artist in Residence, Shropshire
Applications are invited from experienced professional artists for a four term
residency at Highley Primary School, from May 2006 to July 2007.

The artist appointed will have free and exclusive use of a studio at the school,
converted from a demountable classroom, providing ample working space, mains
services and excellent storage, in return for twenty days leading workshops with
pupils.

The artist will also be commissioned to create a piece of public art, involving
pupils from eight primary schools, including Highley, in this process.

The fee for the commission is 10,000 with a budget of 2,000 for materials and
other expenses.

It is expected that the artist will make full use of the studio to develop and
extend their own practice, as well as to work on the commission.  There is a
small budget for furniture and equipment.  The artist will be consulted on how
this budget is spent.

Applications should include proposals for a piece of public art to be sited at
the Severn Valley Country Park, an area of some 180 acres of woodland, meadows
and wetland, spanning both sides of the River Severn between the villages of
Highley and Alveley.  The area was once the site of the Highley and Alveley
Collieries which ceased production in 1969 after almost a hundred years of
mining.  In the late 1980s the area was reclaimed to create the country park.
As well as reclaimed areas the park has large areas of ancient woodland and
unimproved meadows, and the park attracts an increasing variety of wildlife.
More information can be found on the Bridgnorth District Council website,
http://www.bridgnorth-dc.gov.uk.

Proposals should include an initial response and an indication of which aspects
of the site and its history - the river itself, other aspects of the natural
environment, the old mines - would be the most likely focus of the work.
Detailed designs are not required at this stage.  Proposals should also set out
how the artist would involve pupils from the eight primary schools taking part
in the project.  It is expected that one class from each school will be directly
involved and will take part in workshops led by the artist at different stages
in the process.

Applications should include:
- a letter setting out your reasons for applying
- a response to the commission brief
- CV
- names and contact details of two referees.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 23 March.

The successful applicant will be required to undertake a CRB Enhanced Disclosure
check, in line with the school's Child Protection policy.

Applications should be sent to Derval Carey-Jenkins, Headteacher, Highley
Primary School, Grasmere Drive, Highley, Bridgnorth WV16 6EH.

Dates / Deadline: The closing date is Friday 3 March.
